Many of our students receive some form of financial assistance to help pay for their education. Our comprehensive financial aid offerings include scholarships, grants, and loans, all designed to assist students in managing the costs associated with advanced education.

The types of aid you may be eligible to receive vary depending on your location of study.

Eligibility and Need

Your eligibility for financial aid is determined by the information you provide on your financial aid applications, among other factors.

For federal financial aid, NYU uses a federally mandated formula called the “federal need analysis methodology,” which produces the Student Aid Index (SAI) with your submission of the FAFSA. The SAI is then subtracted from NYU's cost of attendance to arrive at the student's financial need for federal financial aid purposes.

For NYU scholarships and grants, eligibility is based on a variety of factors.  Please visit Undergraduate Aid Application and Graduate Aid Application for more information.

Frequently asked questions about types of aid at NYU

Yes, completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required to ensure you don't miss out on any federal grant aid that applies to your financial aid eligibility. You are not required to pursue any loans or federal work-study you may be offered in your financial aid package, but those types of aid may be offered for your consideration if it appears you may be eligible for them.

Students who wish to be considered for scholarship must be reviewed at the time they are an entering student, not as a returning student. To be considered for scholarship in the first year and subsequent years, students must complete the applications prior to admission.
